STRATEGIC ENVIRONMENTAL ASSESSMENT OF THE  
NORTH END COASTLINE, NELSON MANDELA BAY MUNICIPALITY
 
ARCUS GIBB (Pty) Ltd Arcus Gibb was appointed by the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality to conduct a Strategic Environmental Assessment of the proposed North End Coastal Development (NECD). The physical basis of this large-scale project is the restoration of the nearshore sediment transport in the sea through the implementation of a sand bypass system at the Port of Port Elizabeth, which will allow reinstating the sandy beach at North End that was historically lost to the forces of the sea. The proposed development will create the opportunity for major land reclamation on which commercial, residential and recreational development can be placed.
