Rooiwal Waste Water Treatment Works
The proposed project at the Rooiwal Waste Water Treatment Works involves the upgrading of various facilities to improve performance of the works. The purpose of the proposed upgrade is to make various structural modifications to the existing Rooiwal Waste Water Treatment Works with the current capacity of 150Ml/d (megalitres per day), remaining the same.
The Rooiwal WWTW is currently not performing satisfactorily and is therefore not complying with effluent standards. The various permitting requirements for the works are stringent and dictate various effluent standards that must be met consistently by the plant. These effluent standards include Chemical Oxidation Demand (COD), Total Suspended Solids (TSS), Nitrate (NO3), Phosphate (PO4) and residual chlorine.
Through the proposed upgrading process various new structures will be put in place to ensure that the WWTW meets the various effluent standards as set out by the Department of Water Affairs and Forestry (DWAF). The problems that have been noted and that will be dealt with through the proposed upgrading process include the following:
- Sludge carry over of the final clarifiers;
- Erratic phosphate removal as the phosphate in the final effluent had a very low compliance percentage; and
- Incorrect levels of Nitrate.
Should environmental authorisation be granted, construction will begin in January 2010.
