Watershed-Mmabatho 88kV Power Line

 

Arcus GIBB was appointed by Eskom Holdings Limited – Distribution Division (Eskom) to undertake a Basic Assessment and the Public Participation Process (PPP) for the proposed construction of an 88 kV power line from Watershed Distribution Substation (DS) near Lichtenburg, to Mmabatho Bulk Substation (a Major Transmission Station (MTS)) near Mmabatho and Mafikeng, in the North West Province. The proposed power line will be supplied from the old 88kV Zeerust feeder bay at the Watershed DS and will pass through various properties from Lichtenburg to the Mmabatho Area, along the same route as the existing direct Watershed-Mmabatho line – approximately a 60km distance. A new 88kV feeder bay will be constructed and an 88/88 kV 120 MVA booster will be installed, both at the Mmabatho Bulk Substation.
 
Arcus GIBB compiled the Draft Basic Assessment Report (BAR) and distributed it for public comment on 13 February 2009. The public commenting period concluded on 16 March 2009. Subsequent to this, the Department of Environmental Affairs (DEA) requested amendments to the report and required that the report be provided for a second round of comments by interested and affected parties. The purpose of these amendments is to consider alternative alignments that were included in the initial Scoping Report in terms of the ECA. The revised report was accordingly provided for a 14 day comment period as agreed with DEAT (from Monday, 20 July 2009 to Monday, 3 August 2009).
 
All comments received during circulation of the Draft Basic Assessment Report and Revised Basic Assessment Report have been incorporated and addressed in an Issues and Response Report (appended to the Final Revised Basic Assessment Report (FRBAR)). The FRBAR was submitted to the relevant authority, the Department of Environmental Affairs (DEA), for their consideration on the 7 August 2009 and has been made available on this website.
