NOTIFICATION OF ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT ASSESSMENT PROCESS FOR PROPOSED
EXPANSION OF THE EXISTING IRON ORE TERMINAL AT THE PORT OF SALDANHA
NOTIFICATION
Notice is hereby given, in terms of the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) Regulations
published in Government Notices (GN) 543, 544 and 546 of 02 August 2010 and in terms of
the National Environmental Management Act 107 of 1998 (as amended) that Transnet SOC
Ltd proposes to expand the existing iron ore export facility within the Port of Saldanha. The
port expansion is required for the increase of iron ore export from 60 million tons per annum
(Mtpa) to 88 Mtpa. The expansion will involve the construction of an additional berth on the
Saldanha side of the causeway, expansion of the existing iron ore stockyard, one additional
(4th) tippler, two additional stacker-reclaimers, two additional ship loaders, upgrade of the
conveyance, electrical and other associated infrastructure. Dredging of sediment and removal
of hard material will be necessary in the navigation channel near the proposed berth, for the
safe navigation of ships.
The following properties are affected: 196, 195/RE (Hopefield), 1185.
The need for a Scoping and Environmental Impact Assessment process is triggered by:
GN R544 Listing Notice 1: 2, 9, 10, 11, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 22, 24, 28, 38, 39, 40,
42, 43, 44, 45, 53, 54;
GN R545 Listing Notice 2: 5, 14, 15, 24; and
GN R546 Listing Notice 3: 3, 4, 10, 12, 13, 16, 23, 24
The listed activities require environmental authorisation from the national Department of
Environmental Affairs (DEA Reference Number 14/12/16/3/3/2/567).
GIBB (Pty) Ltd has been appointed as the Independent Environmental Assessment
Practitioners to undertake the Scoping and Impact Assessment Process, as well as the
associated Public Participation Process for the project.
Opportunity to register as an Interested and Affected Party
The public is afforded a 40 (forty) day period from 08 July 2013 to 19 August 2013 (inclusive)
to register an interest and to submit comments in writing to the GIBB Public Participation
